Survey Methodology

The Asthma and Allergy Foundation of America (AAFA) and AstraZeneca collaborated in 2007 and again in 2008 to conduct extensive national surveys assessing awareness and attitudes toward asthma in patients 18 years of age and older, and physicians. These surveys included the views of a robust, ethnically-diverse cross-section of Americans and physicians.

G.A.P. II Survey Methodology:

For the 2008 Asthma G.A.P. II study, “asthma patients” were defined as men and women who reported:

  1. Having ever been diagnosed by a health professional with asthma;
  2. Still having asthma;
  3. Having taken any medication to control their asthma in the past 12 months; and
  4. Being at least 18 years of age.

The survey was conducted by telephone between June 27 and August 18, 2008 with a total of 3,664 asthma patients as defined above, including:

  • A national sample of 1,001 asthma patients from all ethnicities and regions;
  • An additional 436 African-American asthma patients across the United States to complement those from the national sample in order to achieve a total sample of 503;
  • An additional 448 Hispanic asthma patients across the United States to complement those from the national sample in order to achieve a total sample of 500; and
  • An additional 1,779 asthma patients residents in six “select metro areas” to complement those from the national sample in order to achieve a total sample of over 300 asthma patients from each of the New York (342), Los Angeles (319), Chicago (318), Dallas-Fort Worth (316), Boston (317) and Atlanta (311) metropolitan areas.

G.A.P. I Survey Methodology:

The G.A.P. I survey was conducted between January 22, 2007, and March 4, 2007, among 4,042 U.S. adults 18 years of age and older. The survey was made up of:

  • A nationally representative sample of 2,029 Americans with or without asthma (849 men and 1,180 women), including:
  • 510 African Americans,
  • 500 Hispanics and
  • 616 asthma patients.

All survey data were weighted to reflect the demographic profile of Americans 18 years of age and older nationwide, in key states, in specific ethnic groups and/or of adult asthma patients, based on statistics from the U.S. Census Bureau.
